Definition
The rate or number of times something happens, especially something bad like a disease or crime, in a particular group or area.
Etymology
From Late Latin 'incidentia' meaning 'a falling upon, occurrence', from 'incidere' (to fall into, happen). It developed a technical sense in science and statistics.
Kelly Says
Incidence isn’t about how serious something is, but how often it happens. In health, a high incidence of a disease means many new cases—like raindrops ‘falling upon’ a population.
