Ingest

/ɪnˈdʒɛst/ verb

Definition

To take food, drink, or another substance into the body through the mouth. To absorb or assimilate information or ideas.

Etymology

From Latin 'ingestus,' past participle of 'ingerere' meaning to carry or bring into, from 'in-' (into) plus 'gerere' (to carry). The word entered English in the 17th century, initially used in medical contexts.

Kelly Says

While we commonly think of ingestion as eating or drinking, the word is increasingly used metaphorically for consuming information or media. Scientists also use 'ingest' to describe how animals consume microplastics or other pollutants, highlighting environmental concerns.
