Definition
A collective farming settlement or community in Israel where people share work, property, and resources in a communal arrangement.
Etymology
From Hebrew 'kibbutz' meaning a gathering or assembly. The kibbutz movement began in early 1900s Palestine as a form of socialist collective living.

Kibbutzim (plural) were radical social experiments—people owned nothing individually and children were raised communally—and they actually worked well enough to become central to Israeli society and agriculture.
