Limehouse

/ˈlaɪmhaʊs/ noun

Definition

A neighborhood in East London known historically for its docks and maritime industry, or loosely, a working-class riverside area.

Etymology

From Old English 'lime' (birdlime, a sticky substance) and 'house.' The area was named either for lime kilns or for a structure where birdlime was produced, used to trap birds.

Kelly Says

Limehouse shows how place names are industrial history written on maps—originally it was just a factory producing sticky birdlime, but it became one of London's most iconic neighborhoods. The name survived even though nobody makes birdlime there anymore, like calling a place 'Steeltown' long after the mills close.
