Monetary

/ˈmɑːnəˌtɛri/ or /ˈmʌnɪˌtɛri/ adjective

Definition

Monetary relates to money, finances, or the system by which a country manages its currency and banking. Monetary policy is how governments control things like interest rates and money supply.

Etymology

From Latin “monetarius,” meaning “pertaining to a mint or coinage,” from “moneta,” a title of the goddess Juno in whose temple coins were minted. The place of minting gave its name to money-related things.

Kelly Says

Money and ‘monetary’ trace back to a Roman goddess whose temple doubled as a mint. Our entire financial system is, in a way, built on a word born from religion, metal, and messaging.
