Narration

/nəˈreɪʃən/ noun

Definition

The act or process of telling a story or giving an account of events. A spoken commentary accompanying a film, television program, or other presentation.

Etymology

From Latin 'narratio' meaning 'a telling, recounting,' derived from 'narrare' meaning 'to tell or relate.' The Latin root comes from 'gnarus' meaning 'knowing, skilled,' showing the connection between knowledge and storytelling. The word entered English via Old French in the 14th century.

Kelly Says

The Latin root 'gnarus' that gives us 'narration' is also the source of 'ignore' (literally 'not knowing') and 'ignorant.' This reveals the fundamental relationship between storytelling and knowledge - narratives are how humans organize and transmit what they know about the world.
