Ogre

/ˈoʊɡər/ noun

Definition

A mythical monster typically depicted as a large, cruel, and hideous creature that eats humans; someone who is cruel or terrifying.

Etymology

From French ogre, possibly from Latin Orcus (Roman god of the underworld) or Hungarian ogre. Popularized by Charles Perrault's fairy tales in the 17th century, though similar creatures exist in folklore worldwide. The word may also connect to the Italian orco.

Kelly Says

Ogres represent humanity's primal fear of being eaten, but what's fascinating is how they've evolved from genuinely terrifying folklore monsters to more sympathetic characters like Shrek. This transformation reflects our changing relationship with the 'other' - we've moved from fearing giants to finding humor and humanity in them, perhaps as we've become the giants ourselves.
