Parapodia

/ˌpærəˈpoʊdiə/ noun

Definition

Paired, fleshy appendages found on each segment of polychaete worms that function in locomotion, respiration, and sometimes feeding. Each parapodium typically contains bundles of setae and may have gill-like extensions.

Etymology

From Greek 'para' meaning 'beside' and 'podion' meaning 'little foot,' literally translating to 'beside feet.' The term was coined in the 19th century as marine biologists studied the diverse appendages of marine worms.

Kelly Says

Parapodia are like Swiss Army knives of the worm world - they're feet, gills, and paddles all rolled into one! Some marine worms use them to create water currents for filter feeding, while others use them like oars for swimming through the water column.
