Definition

To reconcile is to bring people back into friendly relations after a disagreement, or to make two ideas or facts agree with each other.

Etymology

From Latin *reconciliare* meaning ‘to bring together again, restore to union’, from *re-* (again) + *conciliare* (to bring together, make friendly). It originally referred to restoring friendship or peace.

When you reconcile with a friend, you’re literally ‘making friendly again.’ In accounting, ‘reconciling’ accounts is doing the same thing with numbers—forcing them to agree on what really happened.
