Recorders

/rɪˈkɔːrdərz/ noun

Definition

Devices that capture and store sound, images, or data; also wooden wind instruments with finger holes played by blowing into a mouthpiece.

Etymology

From Old French recorder 'to remember, call to mind,' from Latin recordari (re- 'back' + cor 'heart/mind'). The musical instrument sense developed because it 'remembered' melodies played on it.

Kelly Says

The recorder was considered a serious concert instrument in the Baroque period - Bach and Handel wrote extensively for it. Its association with elementary music education came much later, somewhat unfairly diminishing its reputation as a sophisticated instrument.
