Definition
A unit of radioactive decay named after physicist Ernest Rutherford, or reference to the scientist himself who discovered the atomic nucleus. One rutherford equals one million disintegrations per second.
Etymology
Named after Ernest Rutherford (1871-1937), whose surname derives from Old English 'hryther' (cattle) and 'ford' (river crossing). The scientific unit was established to honor his groundbreaking work in nuclear physics.
Kelly Says
Rutherford's gold foil experiment completely revolutionized our understanding of atomic structure by discovering that atoms are mostly empty space with a tiny, dense nucleus. He's the only person to be Nobel laureate in both physics and chemistry for different discoveries.
