Spit

/spɪt/ verb/noun

Definition

To forcibly eject saliva or another substance from the mouth, or a thin pointed rod for roasting meat over a fire.

Etymology

From Old English spittan meaning 'to spit,' related to Proto-Germanic sputtjan. The roasting rod sense comes from Old English spitu, both sharing the notion of something pointed or projected outward.

Kelly Says

The dual meanings of spit create amusing wordplay opportunities - you can spit on a spit while cooking! Interestingly, the distance one can spit was once considered a unit of measurement in some cultures.
