Stability

/stəˈbɪləti/ noun

Definition

Stability is the quality of being steady, balanced, and not likely to change or fall apart. It can describe physical objects that don’t tip over, or situations and emotions that stay calm and reliable.

Etymology

From Old French “stabilité,” from Latin “stabilitas” meaning “firmness, steadiness,” from “stabilis” meaning “firm, steadfast.” The root goes back to a word for “standing” or “staying in place.”

Kelly Says

Stability is basically the opposite of wobble—whether it’s a chair, a job, or a relationship. The same root gives us “establish,” which literally means to make something stand firmly in place over time.
