Definition
An enzyme that catalyzes the synthesis of molecules by joining two or more compounds together, often using energy from ATP.
Etymology
From Greek synthesis 'putting together' (syn- 'together' + thesis 'placing') + -ase (enzyme suffix from diastase). The term emerged in biochemistry as understanding of enzyme classification developed in the 20th century.

Synthetases are molecular matchmakers - they literally put molecules together to create larger, more complex structures! The most famous might be aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases, which ensure the genetic code is translated correctly by matching amino acids to their corresponding tRNAs.
