Definition
Causing severe pain, suffering, or emotional distress; the act of bothering someone repeatedly.
Etymology
From Latin 'tormentum' (instrument of torture), from 'torquere' (to twist). The meaning literally comes from the twisting motions used in medieval torture devices.
Kelly Says
The root 'torquere' (twist) appears in 'contort,' 'extort,' and 'torture'—all words about things being twisted, showing how ancient Romans literally twisted language to describe violence.
