Tarn

/tɑːrn/ noun

Definition

A mountain lake, especially one in a cirque or formed by glacial action.

Etymology

From Old Norse 'tjörn' (a small lake without visible tributaries). Viking settlers brought this word to northern England. Wuthering Heights country is full of tarns.

Kelly Says

A tiny, mysterious mountain lake left behind by a glacier! Vikings gave us this word. Tarns sit in rocky hollows looking like the sky dropped a mirror. They're often SO clear and SO cold! 🏔️🪞
