Topeka

/təˈpiːkə/ noun

Definition

The capital city of Kansas, located in the northeastern part of the state. It serves as the seat of Shawnee County and is home to various government institutions.

Etymology

From Kansa-Osage language, meaning 'place where we dug potatoes' or 'a good place to dig potatoes.' The name was chosen by the settlers in the 1850s from the local Native American terminology for the area.

Kelly Says

Topeka became famous in legal history as the namesake of Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka (1954), the landmark Supreme Court case that declared racial segregation in schools unconstitutional. Despite being a state capital, it's actually not Kansas's largest city - that distinction belongs to Wichita.
